Got word from his secretary, Mrs. Hamilton, that he is in Ohio and that he would like to have some bookings in this area. Wants to know how extensively. Would like to think of a "Grand Edwin Markham home-coming tour". Is no longer a Professor at the University but the editor of "The Independent."

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
